About

This school was designed to reflect the principals of the Waldorf Educational System and Mondrian style paintings. This facility houses eight classrooms including a kindergarten space, administrative office space, common areas and building support spaces. The classrooms were designed with future flexibility in mind, allowing the client multiple uses and a possibility for future expansions. The first floor classrooms each have a kitchenette that includes a range (oven/stove combination) and a range hood, which aides in the teaching methods used in grades 1-3.

Using input from the design committee; made up of parents and teachers from the Winterberry school, allowed the accelerated schedule and project to remain on budget. Some of the goals of this building included allowing as much natural light in to the building without creating distraction or glare as well as creating opportunities for views of the surrounding mountain areas. The lobby/community space incorporates an open structure with exposed wood which helps to create a warm and natural feeling. Many factors contributed to the success of the project including community/school involvement throughout the process and coordination paired with open, effective communication between the design team, sub-consultants and contractor.
