About

The Spa at Alyeska is located within The Hotel Alyeska in Girdwood, a popular ski resort. The spa consists of two massage rooms, two manicure-pedicure stations, one hair styling station and a vichy shower room. There is also a small office, reception desk and waiting room. Provisions for the future expansion and creation of a full hair salon were incorporated into the design of the reception area.

Rich cherry woods and an earthy green color scheme were chosen to provide a peaceful and soothing atmosphere while also complimenting the hotel decor and its natural Alaskan setting. Both massage rooms are graced with 120 degree views of the surrounding woods and the nearby mountain peaks.

The vichy room provides guests with a private and peaceful ambiance. The spa is equipped with a centrally controlled audio system, further enhancing the relaxation experience.

This project encompassed the adaptive re-use of three hotel guest rooms into a spa. The client’s initial approach was to do minor upgrades to the existing spaces, but the final product ended up completely revamping mechanical and electrical systems, as well as all of the interior finishes. The greatest design challenges were sizing up and accommodating the spa’s common areas into spaces designed for private use, as well as dealing with all standard uncertainties of remodeling projects.
