About

Caswell Court is a senior apartment complex within Cook Inlet Housing Authority’s Centennial Village, a campus focused on senior housing and wellness. The Commons mixes 26 one-bedroom apartments and  8 two-bedroom apartments for a total of 34 completely accessible units designed specifically for seniors of varying ability. Co-located with Eklutna Estates, another senior apartment complex, the building maximizes the small site while still providing ample green space, parking and covered and uncovered outdoor plaza areas for residents.

In addition to expertise on the typology of apartment complex design, RIM paid specific attention to designing for the senior user. Great care was given in selecting systems and controls for a population with a large range of comfort zones, who benefit from easy to use and read dials and settings. The interior environment is designed to increase the ease of wayfinding by assigining a specific color to each floor of the building. Special consideration was given to color contract for poor eyesight, ease of mobility beyond what is regulated by code and the creation of small gathering spaces in higher traffic areas that enhance day-to-day interaction between residents. The exterior cladding is a mix of materials that recall the neighboring building, highlight main points of entry and provide simple ornamentation to provide visual interest, as well as to identify units.
